What is Deconstruction?

A sustainable alternative to demolition where structures are disassembled by hand for the purpose of reuse and recycling salvageable material.

  • Reduces the need for extraction of raw materials for new construction

  • Conserves the energy and natural resources used in the manufacturing of new building material

  • Prevents environmental pollution by diverting waste

  • Increases the longevity of landfills

  • Prevents harmful dust from releasing such as lead dust, asbestos, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide, sulfur oxide, and carbon monoxide

  • Creates jobs because more hands are required to dismantle a building

  • Items can be donated to a qualified 501(c)3 charity and claimed by the property owners on their taxes as a donation at fair market value

  • Provide the community with affordable resources

Every year, our nonprofit diverts an average of 740,000 pounds of construction and demolition materials from the landfill, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 583 tons.

2) Site Visit + Formal Proposal

We’ll follow up shortly to schedule a site visit. After the visit, we’ll put together a formal proposal containing:

  • The official quote

  • An estimated timeline

  • Your potential tax deductible for your material donation

*If a demolition permit is needed, the project will begin after it is approved.

3) Deconstruction Time!

Our crew will begin deconstructing your structure to salvage the maximum amount of material. Depending on the size of the project, this can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

We’re able to salvage the structural aspects of your home or building such as beams, wall paneling, and lumber; and the non-structural aspects of your home or building such as doors, windows, cabinets, appliances etc.

5) Donation Receipt for Tax Deduction

If you choose to donate your materials, we’ll provide you with a comprehensive donation receipt of what we salvaged and send it to an appraiser of your choice. The appraiser will provide you with a donation value report so you can receive a tax deduction for the material you donated.

4) Material Donation to Redistribution Centers

If you choose to donate the materials from your deconstruction, they’ll be brought to our Kaka‘ako Warehouse or Kona Lumberyard to be processed and redistributed to the community at an affordable price.

If you choose to keep the materials, they can be given a second life in your next project!
